Short answer: A cubic yard of wood mulch weighs about 400 to 600 pounds as sold. Dry wood chips can be as light as 243 lb and fresh, wet chips about 473 lb. A 2 cu ft bag weighs 20 to 50 lb. Rubber mulch runs about 700 lb a yard, compost about 1,000 to 1,400 lb and stone 2,200 to 2,800 lb.
How much does a yard of mulch weigh? It depends on three things: what the mulch is made of, how wet it is, and whether you measure it loose or packed. We compiled 35 published weights from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, two university extension services, a city compost program, bulk suppliers’ price lists and the specification fields of bagged and palletized mulch listings, all checked in October 2026. The answer box above is the summary; the tables below give every number with its source, plus what that weight means for a pickup, a trailer and a pallet.
400–600 lb per cubic yard of bulk bark or shredded wood mulch (Sky Nursery, Cummin)
28 lb median listed weight of a 2 cu ft bag (10 products, 20 to 50 lb)
1.96–2.87 yd fits level in an F-150 bed, 5.5 to 8 ft box (Ford specs)
How much does a yard of mulch weigh, by type
The formula is the same for every material: weight = cubic yards × pounds per cubic yard. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so a supplier’s per-bag weight converts with pounds per yard = bag weight ÷ bag cubic feet × 27. Worked example: a 2 cu ft bag listed at 20 lb is 20 ÷ 2 × 27 = 270 lb per yard; one listed at 50 lb is 675 lb per yard.
Wood mulch sold in bulk clusters around 400 to 600 lb a yard. Sky Nursery in Shoreline, Wash., lists its fir and hemlock bark at 400 to 500 lb per yard and its cedar play chips at 600 lb (price list revised March 9, 2026). Cummin Landscape Supply near Atlanta lists brown color-enhanced mulch, natural oak, cypress and its playground wood fiber at about 500 lb a yard each. EPA’s conversion factors put wood chips at 243 lb a yard dry and 473 lb green, which brackets those supplier numbers from both sides (EPA, Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors, April 2016).
Where cypress mulch comes from, and how it held up in University of Florida termite and settling trials, is covered in cypress mulch pros and cons.
The dye itself adds little: colorant suppliers put it at 1.5 to 3.25 lb per cubic yard, as our mulch colors comparison explains.

| Material | Lb per cubic yard | Lb per 2 cu ft | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pine straw | 225–258 | 17–19 | LSU 25 lb per 3 cu ft bale; CleanStraw 22 lb per 2.3 cu ft |
| Wood chips, dry | 243 | 18 | EPA conversion factor |
| Leaves, loose | 250–500 | 19–37 | EPA conversion factor |
| Fir or hemlock bark mulch, bulk | 400–500 | 30–37 | Sky Nursery price list |
| Wood chips, green (fresh) | 473 | 35 | EPA conversion factor |
| Shredded hardwood, dyed, cypress, bulk | about 500 | 37 | Cummin, 4 products |
| Bagged wood mulch (13 listings) | 270–675 (median 473) | 20–50 | Pool360 and Walmart.com specs |
| Cedar play chips; composted sawdust mulch | 600 | 44 | Sky Nursery price list |
| Rubber mulch | 540–720 (most 692–701) | 40–53 | Rubbermulch.com; GroundSmart |
| Lava rock | 940–1,200 | 70–89 | Main’s Landscape Supply |
| Compost | about 1,000 (Sky Nursery 1,400) | 74–104 | UNH Extension; City of Columbus; Sky Nursery |
| Decorative stone (granite, marble, slate) | 2,200–2,800 | 163–207 | Main’s, 18 of 22 products |
| River rock, pea gravel, crushed rock | 2,500–2,700 | 185–200 | Sky Nursery price list |
Two things stand out. First, the commonly repeated web figure of 600 to 1,000 lb per yard for ordinary mulch sits above every bulk supplier weight we found; it only fits wood that is wet. Second, rubber mulch is lighter than many guides claim. Rubbermulch.com sells its Playsafer product as 2,000 lb for 77 cu ft, 1,000 lb for 39 cu ft and 40 lb for 1.55 cu ft, which all work out to 692 to 701 lb per yard; the GroundSmart pallet listed on Walmart.com, 25 bags of 1.5 cu ft at 970 lb, is 698 lb per yard.
How much does 1 yard of mulch weigh in tons?
Divide pounds by 2,000. One yard of bark at 400 to 500 lb is 0.20 to 0.25 tons; one yard of compost at 1,000 lb is half a ton; one yard of river rock at 2,500 to 2,700 lb is 1.25 to 1.35 tons. Flip it for per-ton pricing: a ton of 500 lb-per-yard mulch is 4 cubic yards, while a ton of 2,600 lb stone is about 0.77 yards.
Mulch weight calculator: yards to pounds and tons
Enter cubic yards, pick a material and its condition, and the calculator multiplies yards by the pounds per yard in the table above. It also counts loads at two pickup payloads and prices the material for sellers who charge by the ton (county and city yards often weigh you in and out).
- Pounds
- 1,500
- Tons
- 0.75
- Kilograms
- 680
- Loads at 1,500 lb payload
- 1
- Loads at 2,440 lb payload

Pounds = cubic yards × pounds per yard for the material × condition factor. Loads count weight only; a level pickup bed holds about 2 to 2.9 yards, so bulky wood mulch may fill the bed first. Per-ton prices are posted municipal rates checked Oct. 18, 2026. See How we built these numbers.
If you still need the yardage itself, measure the bed: square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 = cubic yards. Ordering by coverage and depth gets its own guide on this site; this page sticks to what that volume weighs.
Wet vs. dry: how much water adds
Water is most of the difference between a light yard and a heavy one. EPA’s factors show wood chips going from 243 lb a yard dry to 473 lb green, a 95 percent jump, and sawdust going from 275 lb dry to 530 lb wet, 93 percent (EPA, 2016). Those are the two cleanest same-material comparisons published, and they set the upper end of what rain or fresh-cut wood can do.
The formula for water gain: added pounds = gallons absorbed × 8.34, or cubic feet of water × 62.4. Water weighs about 62.4 lb per cubic foot (USGS Water Science School), which is 8.34 lb per gallon. Worked example: a 2 cu ft bag that sits on an uncovered pallet and takes on one gallon of rain gains 8.3 lb; a cubic yard pile that soaks up water equal to 10 percent of its volume (2.7 cu ft) gains about 168 lb.
That is also why the same product can carry two weights. Bulk yards selling by the ton make wet mulch cost more per yard, and haulers figure loads on the wet number. If you want your own figure, the Washington State University bucket test works for mulch as well as compost: fill a 5-gallon bucket, weigh the material without the bucket, and multiply by 40 to get pounds per cubic yard.

How much does a bag of mulch weigh?
A 2 cu ft bag of wood mulch is listed at 20 to 50 lb across the 10 products we found with a weight field, with a median of 28 lb. The spread is wood species, particle size and moisture at bagging. The lightest listings are hardwood and cedar at 20 lb (Jolly Gardener, Cowart, Groundcovers International cedar); the heaviest is Whittlessey hardwood at 50 lb, all from distributor or retailer specification fields.

How much does a 2 cubic foot bag of mulch weigh?
Plan on 20 to 50 lb, with about 28 lb typical for dry-stored wood mulch. A 2 cu ft bag of rubber mulch would run about 52 lb at 700 lb a yard. Rain on an open pallet pushes wood bags toward the top of the range.
How much does a 3 cubic foot bag of mulch weigh?
About 44 to 67 lb for wood mulch at the 400 to 600 lb bulk weights (3 ÷ 27 × pounds per yard), and about 78 lb for a 3 cu ft bag of rubber. Pine straw is much lighter: LSU AgCenter uses a 25 lb, 3 cu ft bale as its example and says most Louisiana bales weigh 25 to 51 lb for 3 to 6 cu ft (LSU AgCenter).
How much does a 1.5 cubic foot bag of mulch weigh?
About 30 lb for the two big-box wood mulches we could check: Hyponex by Scotts lists 30.15 lb and a Miracle-Gro Organic pallet works out to 31.2 lb a bag. Rubber in the same bag size runs 30 to 40 lb.
How much does a pallet of mulch weigh, and how many bags are on it?
A pallet of 2 cu ft wood mulch bags usually holds 60 to 70 bags and weighs roughly 1,300 to 3,000 lb, depending on bag weight. The formula: pallet weight = bags × bag weight + the pallet. EPA counts a wood pallet at 25 lb (EPA, 2016). Worked example: 65 Jolly Gardener bags at 20 lb is 1,300 lb, plus 25 lb of pallet, about 1,325 lb; 60 Whittlessey bags at 50 lb is 3,000 lb plus the pallet.
| Pallet | Bags per pallet | Cubic yards | Weight (lb) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jolly Gardener hardwood | 65 × 2 cu ft | 4.81 | about 1,325 (our math) |
| Cowart premium hardwood | 70 × 2 cu ft | 5.19 | about 1,425 (our math) |
| Whittlessey hardwood | 60 × 2 cu ft | 4.44 | about 3,025 (our math) |
| Master Landscape Supply black mulch (Ga.) | 70 × 2 cu ft | 5.19 | not listed; 1,400 to 3,500 at 20 to 50 lb a bag |
| Green Thumb brown colored mulch | 70 × 2 cu ft | 5.19 | 2,450 (listed) |
| Miracle-Gro Organic natural mulch | 80 × 1.5 cu ft | 4.44 | 2,494 (listed) |
| GroundSmart rubber mulch | 25 × 1.5 cu ft | 1.39 | 970 (listed) |
| Rubbermulch.com Playsafer rubber | 1 bulk sack, 77 cu ft | 2.85 | 2,000 (listed) |
| PineStraw.com B-grade pine straw | 48 bales at 9 lb | n/a | about 457 (our math) |
Pallet counts are set by each bagger, so ask the store before you plan around a number. The counts on listings we could open ran 60 to 80 bags for wood mulch, and big-box product titles we saw in search results used 70 two-cubic-foot bags and 80 1.5 cu ft bags. Home Depot and Lowe’s product pages blocked our checks, so we do not cite their pallet weights.

How much mulch can a pickup or trailer carry?
For wood mulch, the truck bed usually fills before the payload runs out; for compost and stone, the payload runs out first. The legal number for your truck is on the Tire and Loading Information placard on the driver’s door pillar. Federal motor vehicle safety standard 110 requires it to state “The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX pounds” (49 CFR 571.110, S4.3). Subtract the driver, passengers and any tools before you load.
Ford’s published F-150 specs show cargo box volumes of 52.8 cu ft (5.5-ft box), 62.3 cu ft (6.5-ft box) and 77.4 cu ft (8-ft box), and maximum available payloads of 1,400 to 2,440 lb depending on engine and configuration (Ford F-150 specifications). The compact Maverick is rated for up to 1,500 lb (Ford Maverick specifications). Super Duty boxes hold 65.4 cu ft (6.75-ft) and 78.5 cu ft (8-ft), and Ford advertises up to 7,900 lb of maximum available payload across the Super Duty line when properly configured (Ford Super Duty specifications).
| Truck bed (level full) | Cu ft | Cu yd | Wood mulch, 500 lb/yd | Rubber, 700 lb/yd | Compost, 1,000 lb/yd | River rock, 2,600 lb/yd |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F-150, 5.5-ft box | 52.8 | 1.96 | 978 | 1,369 | 1,956 | 5,084 |
| F-150, 6.5-ft box | 62.3 | 2.31 | 1,154 | 1,615 | 2,307 | 5,999 |
| F-150, 8-ft box | 77.4 | 2.87 | 1,433 | 2,007 | 2,867 | 7,453 |
| Super Duty, 6.75-ft box | 65.4 | 2.42 | 1,211 | 1,696 | 2,422 | 6,298 |
| Super Duty, 8-ft box | 78.5 | 2.91 | 1,454 | 2,035 | 2,907 | 7,559 |
Read across the table. A level-full 6.5-ft F-150 bed of wood mulch weighs about 1,150 lb, under every engine-level F-150 maximum Ford lists. The same bed of compost is about 2,300 lb, more than most configurations carry, and a full bed of river rock (about 6,000 lb) is far beyond any half-ton. For stone, think one yard per half-ton trip at most.
Can 2 yards of mulch fit in a pickup truck?
Yes in a 6.5-ft or 8-ft bed, and nearly in a 5.5-ft bed: Ford’s 5.5-ft F-150 box holds 52.8 cu ft, or 1.96 yards level, so 2 yards needs a small heap. Two yards of wood mulch at 400 to 600 lb is 800 to 1,200 lb, under the lowest engine-level maximum Ford lists for the F-150 (1,400 lb), though your own placard figure may be lower. Two yards of compost (about 2,000 lb) is not, for many trucks.
Utility trailers
Trailers have their own rating, the GVWR, which covers the trailer plus its load; cargo capacity is GVWR minus empty weight. Big Tex lists its 5-ft-wide 30SA single-axle utility trailer at 2,995 lb GVWR with 2,272 to 2,332 lb cargo capacity (Big Tex Trailers). Carry-On lists its 5×8 5X8SPW at 2,000 lb GVWR, 550 lb empty and 1,450 lb payload (Carry-On Trailer). At 500 lb a yard, a 2,272 lb trailer carries about 4.5 yards of wood mulch by weight, more than its sides usually hold; at 2,600 lb a yard it carries less than one yard of rock.

When a mulch truck becomes a commercial vehicle
For landscape contractors the weight question is also a regulatory one. Under federal rules a vehicle or combination used in interstate commerce with a gross vehicle or combination weight rating of 10,001 lb or more is a commercial motor vehicle (49 CFR 390.5). A commercial driver’s license is required for a single vehicle rated 26,001 lb or more (Group B) or a combination rated 26,001 lb or more when the towed unit is rated over 10,000 lb (Group A) (49 CFR 383.91). A heavy-duty pickup towing a loaded dump trailer can cross the first line. States apply their own versions to intrastate work, so check your state’s motor carrier office.
Cover the load. Washington County, Md., tells mulch customers at its Forty West Landfill that all vehicles must have a tarp over the load and that Maryland law requires it (Washington County, Md.), and Sky Nursery’s price list reminds pickup customers that city law requires open loads to be covered (Sky Nursery).
This page is general information, not legal or safety advice. Load ratings, trailer brake rules and commercial-vehicle requirements vary by vehicle and state; confirm with your owner’s manual and your state motor vehicle agency before you haul.
Mulch trucks and mulch blower trucks: how much they haul
Delivery trucks run out of weight before volume on rock and out of volume before weight on mulch, and supply yards price around that. Portland Rock & Landscape Supply’s rate sheet is unusually specific (Portland Rock delivery rates):
| Truck | Bark, soil or compost | Gravel or river rock | Weight limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| F550, 4-yd dump | 5 yd | 4 yd | 5 tons (boulders, wall rock) |
| International, 5-yd dump | 7.5 yd | 5 yd | 6.5 tons |
| Large dump truck | 15 yd | 10–12 yd | 13–15 tons (boulders, wall rock) |
Blower trucks are sized in level-load cubic yards. Express Blower’s EB-60 spec sheet lists 57.5 cubic yards of level-load capacity, blowing up to 70 cubic yards per hour, for materials weighing up to 2,800 lb per cubic yard (Express Blower EB-60 spec); the maker’s current lineup runs from 41.38 cubic yards to the just-over-100-yard EB-110 (Express Blower EB models). At 450 lb a yard, a full 57.5-yard box of bark is about 25,900 lb of mulch, which is why these are heavy trucks. At the small end, Finn’s BB302 trailer blower has a 1.5 cubic yard hopper and, per Finn, two operators can apply more than 10 cubic yards an hour (Finn BB302 spec sheet).
Stone mulch vs. wood mulch: about five times the weight
Stone mulch weighs 2,200 to 2,800 lb a yard for decorative granite, marble and slate (Main’s Landscape Supply, 18 of 22 stone products; four lighter specialty stones list 1,200 to 1,800 lb) and 2,500 to 2,700 lb for river rock and gravel (Sky Nursery), roughly five times wood mulch at 500 lb. Lava rock is the light exception at 940 to 1,200 lb (Main’s red lava, black lava).
| Bed | Cubic yards | Wood mulch (500 lb/yd) | Lava rock (1,070 lb/yd) | River rock (2,600 lb/yd) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 sq ft at 2 in. | 0.62 | 309 | 660 | 1,605 |
| 100 sq ft at 3 in. | 0.93 | 463 | 991 | 2,407 |
The weight changes the job, not just the haul: stone needs fewer top-ups but more trips and more wheelbarrow loads, and it is hard to remove later. Wood mulch breaks down and gets replaced, which is the trade-off for its lighter load.
Buying mulch by the ton: what the weight costs you
Most yards sell mulch by the cubic yard, but many county and city facilities weigh you in and out and charge per ton. Converting is the same formula in reverse: price per yard = price per ton × pounds per yard ÷ 2,000. Worked example: wood mulch at $20 a ton and 500 lb a yard costs $5 a yard; the same mulch soaked to 950 lb a yard costs $9.50.
| Facility | Product | Price per ton | Per yard at 500 lb/yd (our math) |
|---|---|---|---|
| City of High Point, N.C., Ingleside Compost Facility | Wood mulch | $20 | $5.00 |
| Horry County Solid Waste Authority, S.C. | Natural mulch | $22 | $5.50 |
| Washington County, Md., Forty West Landfill | Mulch | $30 | $7.50 |
| City of Council Bluffs, Iowa | Landscape mulch | $40 | $10.00 |
| Horry County Solid Waste Authority, S.C. | Colored mulch (red, brown, black) | $70 | $17.50 |
| City of High Point, N.C. | Compost | $25 | $12.50 at 1,000 lb/yd |
| Rivanna Solid Waste Authority, Va., Ivy center | Compost | $75 | $37.50 at 1,000 lb/yd |
Pricing by the yard, and what contractors charge to spread it, is covered in our separate mulch cost guide. For broader project budgets, see what landscaping costs and the other cost guides on this site.
How we built these numbers
We compiled 35 weight figures (the CSV) from EPA’s April 2016 volume-to-weight conversion factors, LSU AgCenter, the University of New Hampshire Extension, the City of Columbus, two bulk supplier price lists (Sky Nursery, Wash.; Cummin, Ga.), 22 stone product pages from Main’s Landscape Supply (Mich.), Rubbermulch.com, the Pool360 distributor’s specification fields, and the weight field on Walmart.com product listings, all checked October 15 to 18, 2026. Pool360 and Walmart.com pages were read with a standard browser; Home Depot and Lowe’s pages refused automated access and are not used.
Per-yard weights for bags are our arithmetic: listed weight ÷ bag cubic feet × 27. Pallet weights add EPA’s 25 lb wood pallet. The median bagged-wood weight (473 lb a yard) is the median of 13 wood-mulch listings. Truck tables multiply Ford’s published cargo box volumes (÷ 27) by representative weights: 500 lb (Cummin), 700 lb (rubber, Rubbermulch.com and GroundSmart), 1,000 lb (UNH, Columbus) and 2,600 lb (midpoint of Sky Nursery’s 2,500 to 2,700).
The calculator multiplies cubic yards by one representative pounds-per-yard figure per material from the table (a range midpoint where the source gives a range) and by a condition factor: 1.0 as listed; 1.3 for rained-on mulch, which is our planning allowance, not a measured value; and 1.95 for soaked or fresh-cut wood, the ratio of EPA’s green to dry wood chip factors (473 ÷ 243). Retail and marketplace listing weights may be shipping weights and can differ from the bag in front of you; weigh a 5-gallon sample (× 40) if it matters.
Excluded: blog and calculator-site weights without a stated source, video and forum claims, and any number we could not open and re-read in October 2026.
Mulch weight questions people search
What is the weight of 1 yard of mulch?
About 400 to 600 lb for bark or shredded wood mulch as sold (Sky Nursery, Cummin). Dry wood chips can be 243 lb and fresh chips 473 lb (EPA). Rubber mulch is about 700 lb, compost about 1,000 lb and stone 2,200 to 2,800 lb.
How many pounds is a standard bag of mulch?
A standard 2 cu ft bag of wood mulch is listed at 20 to 50 lb, with a median of 28 lb across 10 products we checked. A 1.5 cu ft bag is about 30 lb, and a 3 cu ft bag about 44 to 67 lb.
How much does one pallet of mulch weigh?
Roughly 1,300 to 3,000 lb for 60 to 70 bags of 2 cu ft wood mulch. Listed examples: 2,450 lb for 70 Green Thumb bags and 2,494 lb for 80 bags of 1.5 cu ft Miracle-Gro Organic. A 25-bag pallet of rubber mulch was listed at 970 lb.
How many bags of mulch are on a pallet?
Usually 60 to 80. Pool360 lists 65, 70 and 60 bags per pallet for three 2 cu ft hardwood mulches, Master Landscape Supply sells a 70-bag pallet, and Miracle-Gro Organic comes 80 bags of 1.5 cu ft to a pallet. Rubber mulch pallets are smaller, about 25 bags.
How many bags of mulch per pallet at Home Depot or Lowe’s?
Their product pages blocked our checks, so we can’t cite a count. Product titles shown in search results used 70 bags of 2 cu ft and 80 bags of 1.5 cu ft; ask the garden center, because counts vary by brand and store.
Can 2 yards of mulch fit in a pickup truck?
Usually. A 6.5-ft F-150 box holds 2.31 yards level and an 8-ft box 2.87 yards; a 5.5-ft box holds 1.96 yards, so 2 yards needs a small heap. Two yards of wood mulch weighs 800 to 1,200 lb, under the lowest F-150 engine maximum Ford lists (1,400 lb); check your door placard.
Is it cheaper to buy mulch by the yard or by the bag?
Bulk is usually cheaper per yard once you need more than a few yards, but delivery fees and minimums matter; one yard equals 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft. Our mulch cost guide compares prices. On weight, bulk lets you haul in fewer, heavier trips.
What is the 3-3-3 rule for mulch?
It is a rule of thumb rather than an extension standard: about 3 inches of mulch, kept about 3 inches from trunks, in a ring at least 3 feet across around new trees. University of Maryland Extension says to keep mulch about 3 inches from tree trunks and apply bark 1 to 3 inches deep; Clemson calls for a 3 to 4 ft circle around newly planted trees.
How much should I charge to lay 10 yards of mulch?
Pricing is covered in our mulch cost guide. For the haul: 10 yards of wood mulch weighs about 4,000 to 6,000 lb, which is a single 15-yard dump delivery or about 4 level loads in an 8-ft pickup bed.
