Artificial turf costs an estimated $5.40 to $9.80 per square foot installed, about $7,857 for 1,000 sq ft at mid grade. The turf itself is under 40 percent of that; labor, base rock and infill make up the rest.
Key takeaways
- A mid-grade 1,000 sq ft install prices out at $7,857: $3,025 of turf, $2,899 of labor (48 person-hours at $60.39, built from BLS OEWS May 2025 wages), $1,080 of sand infill and $538 of base rock.
- Turf price tracks face weight: across eight Turf Factory Direct Special products it rises from $2.09 per sq ft at 40 oz to $3.49 at 87 and 90 oz, about 2.9 cents per extra ounce (prices checked Oct. 19, 2026).
- Small jobs cost more per foot: about $10.58 per sq ft for 200 sq ft against $7.61 for 2,000 sq ft at mid grade, because setup hours, the sod cutter and the base delivery do not shrink with the yard.
- Published installed prices span $4.99 per sq ft from a Las Vegas installer (US Turf) to $7.08 to $33.00 in a 2024 municipal bid (City of San Antonio).
- Most turf-removal rebates exclude artificial turf: Southern California’s program says “Synthetic turf is not allowed” (SoCal WaterSmart). Southern Nevada pays $5 per sq ft, plus $2 for Las Vegas Valley Water District customers, when the turf is permeable (SNWA terms).

How much does artificial turf cost per square foot?
Artificial turf costs about $5.41 per sq ft at economy grade, $7.86 at mid grade and $9.82 at premium grade for a 1,000 sq ft yard where an existing lawn is cut out. Those are our estimates built from price checked oct. 19, 2026 retail prices for turf, sand and rock plus BLS-based labor. Turf is 34 to 39 percent of each total; labor is 34 to 45 percent.
The tiers differ in three inputs. Economy uses On Deck Sports PT Pro 50 at $1.68 per sq ft, pickup-priced silica sand and 3 inches of base. Mid grade uses TFD 70 Special at $2.75 with shipped silica sand and 3.5 inches of base. Premium uses TFD 87 Special at $3.49 with Envirofill coated sand and 4 inches of base, and adds 8 person-hours for the deeper dig.
| Line item, 1,000 sq ft | Economy | Mid grade | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turf, plus 10% for cuts and seams | $1,848 | $3,025 | $3,839 |
| Base rock, 3 / 3.5 / 4 in, delivered | $468 | $538 | $608 |
| Weed barrier fabric | $80 | $80 | $80 |
| Nails (one 50 lb box) and one seam kit | $140 | $140 | $140 |
| Infill, 2 lb per sq ft | $360 | $1,080 | $1,680 |
| Sod cutter rental, 1 day | $95 | $95 | $95 |
| Labor: 40 / 48 / 56 person-hours at $60.39 | $2,416 | $2,899 | $3,382 |
| Total | $5,407 | $7,857 | $9,824 |
| Per sq ft | $5.41 | $7.86 | $9.82 |
| Materials and rental only (DIY) | $2,991 | $4,958 | $6,442 |
The chart and table show the same mid-grade build. Labor at $2,899 and turf at $3,025 are nearly equal, and together they are 75 percent of the $7,857 total. Infill is the surprise line: 2 lb per sq ft of shipped silica costs $1,080, while the same weight of pickup-priced silica from Purchase Green costs $360.
Per-sq-ft ranges run from San Antonio to Seattle metro wages (BLS OEWS May 2025) on the materials in this guide's tables, checked Oct. 19, 2026. Default result for 1,000 sq ft at mid grade: $7,470 to $8,616; the U.S.-median estimate is $7,857. The size factor is built for installer prices. Adders are fixed amounts for about 1,000 sq ft. Excludes sales tax, permits and truck time for haul-off.
How much is 200, 500, 1,000 or 2,000 square feet of turf?
At mid grade, 200 sq ft of artificial turf costs about $2,116, 500 sq ft about $4,312, 1,000 sq ft about $7,857, 1,500 sq ft about $11,611 and 2,000 sq ft about $15,225. Price per sq ft falls from $10.58 to $7.61 because 8 setup hours, one sod-cutter day and one base delivery are spread over more turf.
| Area | Economy total (per sq ft) | Mid grade total (per sq ft) | Premium total (per sq ft) | Mid-grade person-hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 sq ft | $1,627 ($8.13) | $2,116 ($10.58) | $2,510 ($12.55) | 16 |
| 300 sq ft | $2,160 ($7.20) | $2,895 ($9.65) | $3,485 ($11.62) | 20 |

Two ordering rules hit small yards. Turf Factory Direct sells its landscape turf in a 15 ft standard width with a minimum purchase of 15 by 15 ft (225 sq ft), and charges $99 to ship to a residence with a 300 sq ft minimum for residential delivery. A 10 by 20 ft side yard therefore buys at least 225 sq ft of turf and may need a dock pickup.
Above about 1,000 sq ft, the curve flattens: mid grade drops only from $7.86 to $7.61 per sq ft, because turf, sand, rock and most labor scale directly with area. A quote that falls sharply per foot past 1,000 sq ft usually reflects a cheaper turf, a thinner base or less infill, and the quote should name each.
What does the turf itself cost, by face weight and yarn?
Landscape turf sold for lawns ran $1.68 to $3.75 per sq ft across 14 products we priced on Oct. 19, 2026. Face weight, the ounces of yarn per square yard, is the main price driver: Turf Factory Direct’s Special line climbs about 2.9 cents per sq ft for each added ounce. Pile height (1 to 2 inches) and thatch color moved price far less.

The cheapest way to buy face weight is not always the lightest product. On Deck Sports PT Pro 50 at $1.68 (a sale price against $2.45) costs 3.4 cents per ounce of face weight, while TFD 90 Special at $3.49 costs 3.9 cents and carries a 15-year warranty against 10 years on the TFD 87 at the same price. Warranty length does not track price: TFD 59 Special at $2.49 also carries 15 years.
Yarn type is where several cost guides go wrong. LawnStarter and Thumbtack list polypropylene, polyethylene and nylon as three lawn options. In every landscape product above that names its fiber, the blades are polyethylene; polypropylene appears only as thatch on three Turf Factory Direct products. Nylon shows up in this seller’s putting turf line, at $2.89 (Nylon 36 UR) and $3.69 (Nylon Putt Extreme) per sq ft.
What do infill and base material add to the price?
Infill adds $0.36 to $1.68 per sq ft at 2 lb per sq ft, and base rock adds about $0.49 to $1.16 per sq ft at 3.5 inches before delivery. Both swing more by where you buy than by what you buy: a 50 lb bag of silica infill costs $8.99 as a store-pickup item from Purchase Green (16 grit) and $26.99 shipped from Turf Factory Direct (16/30 grit), freight included.
| Infill | Seller | Price | Rate per sq ft | Cost per sq ft | Cost per 1,000 sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silica sand, 16 grit (pickup price) | Purchase Green | $8.99 per 50 lb | 2 lb | $0.36 | $360 |

| Envirofill coated sand (Tucson yard, sale price) | Earth Stone Rock (Tucson, Ariz.) | $26.00 per 50 lb | 2 lb | $1.04 | $1,040 |
| Envirofill coated sand (shipped) | Turf Factory Direct | $41.99 per 50 lb | 2 lb | $1.68 | $1,680 |
| Zeolite odor topper: Zeodorizer | Purchase Green | $19.99 per 50 lb | 0.5 lb | $0.20 | $200 |
| Zeolite odor topper: ZeoFill | Bee Green (retailer) | $20.99 per 50 lb | 0.5 lb | $0.21 | $210 |
Envirofill is sand with an acrylic coating that Turf Factory Direct says carries anti-odor and antimicrobial properties and keeps turf “up to 25% cooler” than standard sand; the seller does not cite a test for that figure, and it says the product is not suitable for putting greens (TFD Envirofill). Zeolite is an odor absorber, not a ballast: Purchase Green says zeolite lacks the biocides of coated sand and holds ammonia from pet urine until rain carries it away (Purchase Green infill guide), so it works as a topper with sand in dog areas.

| Class 2 road base (Arizona) | $62.99 per ton | $896 | $946 | Earth Stone Rock (Tucson, Ariz.) |
Base depth is the spec that cheap quotes cut. Star Nursery‘s guide calls for removing 3 to 4 inches of soil and laying 3 to 4 inches of Type II road base or white chat compacted to 90 percent with a plate compactor. Cutting the base from 3.5 to 2 inches would save only about $209 of crusher run on 1,000 sq ft and leaves less rock to carry water away from the soil.
How is artificial grass installed, step by step?
A turf install is excavation, a compacted stone base, fabric, turf, seams, nails and infill, in that order. Using Star Nursery‘s March 2026 guide, a 1,000 sq ft yard needs about 11 cubic yards of base, one 50 lb box of nails, at least one 30 ft seam kit and 1,000 to 2,000 lb of infill. Our cost model allows 40 to 56 crew hours for it.
- Mark and measure. Turf comes in 15 ft widths (Turf Factory Direct), so plan seams to run the same way and add 10 to 20 percent for cuts. Call 811 before digging.
- Remove 3 to 4 inches of sod and soil and set a rough grade for drainage (Star Nursery). A 1 day sod cutter rental is $95 (Fisher’s Rental); about 11 cubic yards of soil leave a 1,000 sq ft site at 3.5 inches.
- Spread 3 to 4 inches of Type II road base and compact it to 90 percent with a plate compactor, keeping a slight grade. A plate compactor rents for $65 a day (Fisher’s Rental). For pet areas, Star Nursery spreads its Turfresh product on the base at 1/2 lb per sq ft and compacts it.
- Lay weed barrier fabric over the base, overlapping its seams 6 to 12 inches, and pin it with 40D nails or landscape staples (Star Nursery).
- Unroll the turf at least 2 hours before installing so it relaxes, trim the factory edge (salvage) 3 stitches in from each side, and cut to fit from the back (Star Nursery).
- Nail one end every 3 to 4 inches, stretch the turf, and nail every 12 to 24 inches through the middle and every 3 to 4 inches around the perimeter. One box of 40D to 60D nails covers about 600 sq ft (Star Nursery).
- Join seams with seam tape and glue, with the grain of both pieces running the same way; one Turf Factory Direct seam kit covers 30 ft of seam for $69.99. Nail seams every 1 to 2 inches without countersinking (Star Nursery).
- Power broom the turf, spread infill with a drop spreader at 1 to 2 lb per sq ft, then broom again until the blades stand up (Star Nursery).
The step that decides the bill is step 2. Hauling about 13 tons of excavated soil (our estimate at 1.2 tons per cubic yard) costs about $151 in tipping fees at Sacramento County’s certified-clean-soil rate of $11.60 per ton (Kiefer Landfill) and about $716 at the City of Phoenix’s $55 per ton transfer-station rate (City of Phoenix), before truck time. Our totals exclude it, so ask whether a quote includes haul-off.
Why do published prices run from $4.99 to $19.74 per square foot?
Published artificial turf prices run from $4.99 per sq ft (an installer’s entry price in Las Vegas) to $19.74 (the top of one cost estimator’s range) because they price different jobs. Installer prices usually start from a cleared, accessible yard; estimator and survey figures fold in minimum charges, debris disposal and contractor markup. Our line-item build lands at $5.41 to $9.82.

The bid data shows how far a public job can sit above a backyard. Four contractors bid the same 1,200 sq ft dog park for the City of San Antonio at $8,500, $15,488.50, $19,000 and $39,600 (City of San Antonio). The low bid, $7.08 per sq ft, sits inside our $5.41 to $9.82 range; the high bid carries public-works bonding and paperwork that a homeowner does not pay for.
For a homeowner, the useful test is itemization. A quote at $15 or more per sq ft should name the turf product and face weight, base depth in inches, infill type and pounds per sq ft, and whether soil haul-off is included. Each of those lines has a published price, so each can be checked against the tables on this page. Our guide to reading a landscaping estimate lists what else a written quote should state.
What raises or lowers an artificial turf quote?
Five things move a 1,000 sq ft turf quote by $200 or more: the turf grade (up to $1,991), whether soil haul-off is included ($151 to $716 in dump fees), hand-carry access (about $1,015 more labor), local wages (minus $387 to plus $760 against the U.S. rate) and a rebate where turf qualifies (up to $7,000 off in Las Vegas). The table puts a dollar figure on each.

How much does artificial turf cost in my area?
Regional wages move a 1,000 sq ft mid-grade job by about 5 percent down to 10 percent up, because only labor changes with them. Using May 2025 BLS medians for landscaping workers and supervisors in each metro, the same job runs from $7,470 in San Antonio to $8,616 in Seattle; in the Texas, Florida, Arizona and Nevada metros in the table it stays between $7,470 and $7,828.

| Seattle | $23.31 | $36.78 | $76.22 | $8,616 |
Seattle’s loaded rate, $76.22 per person-hour, is 46 percent above San Antonio’s $52.34, yet the job total moves far less because materials are 63 percent of the U.S. mid-grade bill. The wage tables behind these rates are in our landscaper salary data.
What does a dog run or putting green cost?
A dog run usually swaps in a short, dense pet turf and an odor-control infill. TFD K-9 Supreme has a 1 inch pile and 69 oz face weight for $2.99 per sq ft, and a zeolite topper adds about $0.20 per sq ft. Apex Turf, an Arizona installer, says pet turf adds $1.50 to $3 per sq ft to an install (Apex Turf).
Odor control also depends on upkeep: Simple Green’s directions call for a weekly enzyme treatment kept wet 10 minutes, as our artificial grass cleaning schedule explains.
Warranty terms change too. US Turf says its two pet turfs, including the 132 oz Lush, carry a 3-year manufacturer warranty instead of its standard 15-year term, with 2 years of labor coverage. Putting greens are a different build, priced per sq ft of putting surface, with nylon or sand-filled turf and a finer grade; our putting green cost guide prices them line by line.
Will a rebate or state law change what you pay?
Rarely in your favor on price. Most Western turf-removal rebates pay only for living or rock landscapes and exclude synthetic turf, including Southern California’s regional program and Austin’s. The exceptions we found are Southern Nevada, which pays $5 to $7 per sq ft for grass replaced with permeable turf, and Glendale, Ariz., which pays $0.25 per sq ft, up to $250.

| Los Angeles DWP, residential | $5 per sq ft ($3 LADWP + $2 MWD), up to 5,000 sq ft | No, runs through the SoCal WaterSmart program | LADWP |
| City of Glendale, Ariz. | $0.25 per sq ft for artificial grass, up to $250; at least 500 sq ft of grass removed | Yes; the city mails recipients a 1099 tax form | City of Glendale |
| Austin Water | WaterWise landscape rebate | No: artificial turf is not eligible | Austin Water |

In Southern Nevada the rebate can exceed the install. At $7 per sq ft for a Las Vegas Valley Water District customer, 1,000 sq ft of qualifying grass earns $7,000 against our $7,857 mid-grade estimate. The conditions are real: drip irrigation for plants, no overspray, plant cover rules and a conservation easement on the converted area (SNWA terms). SNWA’s own pages also show an older $3 per sq ft rate in one conditions section, so get the rate in your approval letter.
State law affects whether you can install turf, not what it costs. The table lists the four state rules we confirmed in statute or rule text in October 2026; our artificial turf vs real grass comparison covers PFAS limits and heat in more depth.
| State | Rule | Who it binds | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | HOA rules that ban “artificial turf or any other synthetic surface that resembles grass” are void (Civil Code 4735, as amended by AB 349, 2015) | Homeowner associations | AB 349 enrolled text |
| Florida | Cities and counties may not prohibit synthetic turf that meets DEP standards on single-family lots of 1 acre or less (Fla. Stat. 125.572); standards in Rule 62-308.100, effective May 19, 2026 | Local governments | Fla. Stat. 125.572; Rule 62-308.100 |
| Texas | HOAs may not ban drought-resistant landscaping or water-conserving natural turf (Property Code 202.007); the text does not mention artificial turf | Property owners’ associations | SB 198 enrolled |
| Nevada | From Jan. 1, 2027, Colorado River water may not irrigate nonfunctional grass on property not zoned exclusively single-family (AB 356, 2021) | Commercial, HOA and multifamily property | SNWA laws page |

Is it cheaper to install artificial turf yourself?
Yes, by roughly the labor line: DIY materials and rentals for 1,000 sq ft run about $2,991 to $6,442, against $5,407 to $9,824 installed, plus a $65 plate-compactor day. The cost is moving about 11 cubic yards of soil out and 11 of rock in, and a base you compact yourself carries no installer warranty if it settles or ponds.
| Do it yourself | Hire an installer | |
|---|---|---|
| Out-of-pocket, 1,000 sq ft mid grade | $5,023 (materials, sod cutter, plate compactor) | $7,857 |
| Turf delivery | $99 residential shipping, 300 sq ft minimum (Turf Factory Direct) | Part of the installer’s material cost; ask |
| Soil out, rock in | About 11 cu yd each way at 3.5 in; base yard weighs about 1.3 tons (Star Nursery) | Skid steer and crew |
| Labor | Your time; our crew model uses 48 person-hours | $2,899 at $60.39 per person-hour |
| Warranty | Turf warranty only (10 or 15 years at TFD) | Turf warranty plus any labor warranty the installer offers (US Turf: 2 years) |
| Biggest risk | Under-compacted base: dips, puddles, wrinkles | Thin base or skipped haul-off hidden in a low quote |
A middle path cuts the risk: hire out the excavation and base, then lay, seam and infill the turf yourself. Excavation and base carry nearly all of the drainage risk and most of the heavy lifting (about 13 tons of soil out and 14 tons of rock in for 1,000 sq ft), while the turf steps are the ones Star Nursery‘s eight-step guide walks through. If you hire any part of it, check the contractor’s license where your state requires one, using our guide to checking a landscaper’s license.
What does artificial turf cost over 15 years?
Over 15 years, a mid-grade 1,000 sq ft turf yard costs about $8,307 with do-it-yourself cleaning, or about $13,907 if the turf wears out and is relaid on the same base around year 10 to 12. Turf Factory Direct warranties run 10 or 15 years, so plan for one replacement on lighter products.
| 15-year cost, 1,000 sq ft | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-grade install | $7,857 | This page |
| Cleaner and brushes, $30 a year | $450 | Enzyme cleaner, one 64 oz bottle a year, as in our comparison model |
| Total if the turf lasts 15 years | $8,307 | Warranty: 15 years on TFD 59 and 90; 10 years on TFD 70 and 87 |
| Replacement turf and infill laid on the existing base | $5,600 | Our comparison model’s estimate, before disposal |
| Total with one replacement | $13,907 | Estimate |
The grass side of that ledger is cheap up front: a new sod lawn on ready soil costs about $1,000 to $1,600 per 1,000 sq ft in our sod installation cost guide, and seeding costs less, as our grass seed cost guide shows. Our sod vs seed comparison prices both per 1,000 sq ft. Turf pays back only where it replaces paid mowing or expensive water, or where a rebate covers it; for a whole-yard project with patio and planting, our landscaping cost guide prices each line.
Which option fits your yard?
Choose by the problem you are solving. Turf earns its cost in a dog run worn to dirt, a shaded strip where grass fails, or a Las Vegas lawn that qualifies for a $5 to $7 per sq ft rebate. For a whole sunny yard in a rainy climate, sod at about $1 to $1.60 per sq ft installed usually wins on 15-year cost.
| If your situation is | Do this | Why (source) |
|---|---|---|
| Las Vegas Valley, healthy lawn, willing to meet plant-cover rules | Apply for the SNWA rebate before you sign; use permeable turf | $5 + $2 per sq ft can cover a mid-grade install (SNWA) |
| Southern California or Austin, want a rebate | Choose plants, mulch or rock instead of turf, or skip the rebate | Synthetic turf is excluded (SoCal WaterSmart; Austin Water) |
| Under 300 sq ft (dog run, side yard) | Budget about $9.60 to $10.60 per sq ft mid grade, or DIY | Setup hours and minimum orders dominate; TFD sells at least 225 sq ft |
| Dog area | Short-pile pet turf plus zeolite or coated infill | About $0.20 per sq ft for zeolite (Purchase Green) |
| Quote above $15 per sq ft | Ask for turf name, face weight, base inches, infill lb per sq ft and haul-off | Line items total $5.41 to $9.82 per sq ft before haul-off (this page) |
| No machine access to the back yard | Add about 35 percent to labor, or DIY the base in stages | Our hand-carry assumption |
| HOA says no (California) | Cite Civil Code 4735 | HOA bans on artificial turf are void (AB 349) |
| Sunny lawn, you mow it yourself, rainy climate | Keep or resod the lawn | Turf rarely pays back without paid mowing or a rebate (our comparison model) |

How we compiled this
We compiled 123 data points from 29 seller, supply-yard and rental pages, 4 installer price pages, 3 cost guides, a municipal bid, Star Nursery’s installation guide, 7 water-agency pages, 2 landfill fee schedules, 4 statutes or rules and BLS wage data, accessed Oct. 19, 2026. We did not install, test or price any job ourselves; every total is an estimate built from those inputs.
- Turf: area plus 10 percent for cuts and seams. Infill: 2 lb per sq ft. Base: 0.0031 cu yd per sq ft per inch at $45 per cu yd plus $50 delivery; fabric at $0.08 per sq ft.
- Labor: 8 fixed hours plus 0.032, 0.040 or 0.048 hours per sq ft (our planning assumption, not a measurement), priced at $60.39 per person-hour: three landscaping workers at $18.82 and one supervisor at $28.09 (BLS May 2025 medians), divided by 0.70 because wages are 70.0 percent of private employer costs (BLS ECEC), times 2.0 for equipment, insurance, overhead and profit. The same rate runs through our sod, putting green and turf comparison pages.
- Excluded: soil haul-off and dump fees, sales tax, permits, edging, irrigation changes, slopes and difficult access, each priced separately in the tables above where a published rate exists.
This page is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Rebate terms and local rules change by fiscal year; confirm with your water utility, city and HOA before you remove a lawn or sign a contract.
Frequently asked questions
How much is 1000 square feet of fake grass?
About $5,407 to $9,824 installed over an existing lawn, or $5.41 to $9.82 per sq ft, with $7,857 at mid grade. Materials and rentals alone run about $2,991 to $6,442 if you install it yourself. Soil haul-off, sales tax and permits are extra in both cases.
How much is 1500 square feet of turf?
About $7,936 to $14,561 installed, or $11,611 at mid grade ($7.74 per sq ft), before soil haul-off and sales tax. That assumes 1,650 sq ft of turf bought for 10 percent waste, two seam kits, three boxes of nails, about 3,000 lb of infill and 68 crew hours at $60.39 per person-hour.
How much is 200 square feet of artificial turf?
About $1,626 to $2,509 installed, or $2,116 at mid grade. That is $10.58 per sq ft, higher than larger yards because setup time and the sod-cutter day do not shrink. Turf Factory Direct also sells at least 225 sq ft per order.
How much does it cost to install 500 square feet of artificial turf?
About $3,087 to $5,296, with $4,312 at mid grade ($8.62 per sq ft), based on published material prices and BLS-based labor. Doing it yourself costs about $1,638 to $3,363 in materials and rentals, plus a $65 plate-compactor day, and leaves about 5 cubic yards of soil to haul away.
What is the best thing to put under artificial grass?
Three to 4 inches of Type II road base or similar crushed rock, compacted to 90 percent with a plate compactor and graded slightly to drain, then weed barrier fabric overlapped 6 to 12 inches at its seams, per Star Nursery’s March 2026 installation guide. One cubic yard of base covers about 80 sq ft at 4 inches.
Does artificial grass need to be glued down?
Only at the seams. Seams are joined with adhesive seam tape (Turf Factory Direct’s $69.99 kit pairs 30 ft of tape with glue), and the rest of the turf is held with 40D to 60D nails every 3 to 4 inches around the edge and every 12 to 24 inches in the field, per Star Nursery.
Is there a rebate for artificial grass in Los Angeles?
No. LADWP’s $5 per sq ft residential turf replacement rebate ($3 from LADWP plus $2 from Metropolitan Water District, up to 5,000 sq ft) runs through the SoCal WaterSmart program, which states that synthetic turf is not allowed in a Turf Replacement Program project. Plants, mulch and permeable paths qualify instead.
Is it cheaper to install grass or turf?
Grass is far cheaper to install: about $1.00 to $1.60 per sq ft for sod on ready soil against $5.41 to $9.82 for turf with the lawn removed. Turf can recover the gap only by replacing paid mowing or high water bills, or through a rebate such as Southern Nevada’s $5 to $7 per sq ft.
